Why You Shouldn't Convert an Ice Chest into a Cold Tub

There is an obvious reason why you should not convert an ice chest into a cold immersion tub: an ice chest is not a cold immersion tub. This means that using an ice chest as a cold immersion tub may damage the chest and make it unusable for its intended purpose. 

“So what? The new intended purpose is going to be a cold immersion tub, not a freezer.” Sure, but the problem is just that - the intended purpose is to be an ice chest, not a cold tub. 

The materials used in ice chests may not be suitable for contact with water for an extended period of time, and the chest may not be structurally sound enough to support the weight of a person. The water and the weight of a person may cause the chest to become distorted or weakened, creating safety issues by damaging the chest and making it useless.

The point of a cold immersion tub is to keep the water temperature stable through proper insulation. The insulation in an ice chest is not designed to hold large volumes of water at a stable temperature for an extended period of time. The result? The ice chest will lose heat to the surrounding air much more quickly than a properly insulated cold immersion tub and lead to unstable temperatures.

Cold immersion can be dangerous if not done properly. Using an ice chest that is not designed for this purpose increases the risk of injury or accidental hypothermia. No matter where you are in your journey for a healthier life, make the proper investments and set yourself up for success.
